••  January 9, 2016 SHHAR's presentation:
Dual program, Doris Hand will tell the story of Guy Gabaldon, the World War II Marine who captured over 1500 enemy prisoners.  Guy Gabaldon, an 18 year old Mexican-American Marine from East Los Angeles, was given the name, "Pied Piper of Saipan". Also present for the event will by artist, Henry Godiness, who painted the painting of Guy Gabaldon which will be on display. Dick McFarland, Director of the Orange County Family Search Library will speak next.  Mr. McFarland will present a virtual tour of the many facilities available at that library for genealogy researchers.

••  February 13, 2016 SHHAR's presentation:
Sylvia Mendez, The Girl Who Made Civil Rights History Sylvia Mendez, daughter of Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez, defendendants of the landmark school desegregation case. Mendez vs. Westminster, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Feb. 15, 2011 for her effort to educate young people about the desegregation movement and it's vital role in the history of the United States. The class action lawsuit, filed in Orange County, made CA the first state in the nation to end school segregation. The Metal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor. Click Here

John Schmal topic is “Journey to Latino Representation"

••  April 9, 2016 SHHAR's presentation:
Dr. Vicki Ruiz “Empire of Dreams” is the topic of a program moderated by Dr. Vicki Ruiz, Professor of Chicano Studies at the University of California, Irvine.  This title is part of the PBS documentary on Latino Americans that covers the immigration period 1880 to 1942.  The topic covers a formative period in California.

••  May 14, 2016 SHHAR's presentation:
Mimi Lozano Topic: Mimi Lozano, is editor of Somos Primos, an on-line Hispanic Magazine. She will present its history, purpose, goal, value, and uses. Somos Primos was first published in print format quarterly for 10 years and is now on its 17th year on-line. The magazine gets over a million and a half hits every month. Why?  How can it help you today?

••  June 11, 2016 SHHAR's presentation:
Art Montez and Zeke Hernandez, Vietnam Era Veterans Topic: “PBS DOCUMENTARY: On Two Fronts: Latinos & Vietnam” This documentary examines the Latino experience during a war that placed its heaviest burden on working class youth. It raises issues that remain relevant today. In communities where there were few alternatives to service, war impacted every household — especially amongst Latinos.

••  July 9, 2016 SHHAR's presentation:
“Mexican Immigration Patterns with a Focus on Bracero Era” Featured speakers will be Tom Saenz and Refugio Sanchez who will make a presentation on Mexican Immigration trends in the United States through the years. They will specifically discuss some key factors affecting immigration, number of immigrants, distribution and the significance of their contribution to United States history. The talk will include a discussion of the Bracero program 1942-1974.

••  September 10, 2016 SHHAR's presentation:
John Schmal: “Finding Your Mexican Roots”

••  October 8, 2016 SHHAR's presentation:
Letty Rodella. “Spanish Patriots during the American Revolution and the DAR and SAR Connection” is presented by Letty Rodella.  Letty will give a brief history of the support given to the Continental Army by Spain and the Spanish Soldiers; mention resources where the names of these Spanish Soldiers are listed (perhaps you are a descendent of a Spanish Patriot); and explain the requirements for descendants of Spanish Patriots who wish to apply for membership into the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and into the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

••  November 12, 2016 SHHAR's presentation:
Linda Serna topic TBD. Linda is a member of several professional organizations and is Vice President of Programs for the Orange County California Genealogical Society (OCCGS).

••  December 12, 2016
There will not be a SHHAR presentation in December; however, the Orange Family History Center will be open.
